PIPE TAP BASICS

The American National Standard Pipe Thread (NPT) standards, also known as national pipe thread, are technical guidelines in the U.S. for screw threads used in threaded pipes and fittings. These standards include both tapered and straight thread series designed for various applications, such as providing rigidity, pressure-tight sealing, or both. Each type of thread is identified by a symbol and a full name. Examples include NPT, NPS, NPTF, NPSC, and more.

  • NPT (National Pipe Taper) – These high-speed steel pipe taps are commonly used. NPT joints usually require a sealant for proper sealing.
  • NPTF (Dryseal) – This type is used in high-pressure situations.
  • Interrupted Thread – This type of thread design helps with chip removal and is ideal for soft, ductile materials like aluminum. Every other thread after the lead is removed to prevent clogging.
  • NPS Straight Thread: Used for cutting NPS (straight) pipe threads. These threads are commonly found on pipes, lamps, and lighting fixtures.
  • Long Taper Pipe Taps: These are extension pipe taps (e.g., 6 OAL/Overall Length).
  • Common U.S. Sizes: The standard sizes used in the U.S. include 1⁄8, 1⁄4, 3⁄8, 1⁄2, 3⁄4, 1, 11⁄4, 11⁄2, 2, 21⁄2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inches.

British Standard Pipe (BSP)
BSP is a set of technical standards for screw threads that are used internationally for connecting and sealing pipes and fittings. BSP threads involve an external (male) thread and an internal (female) thread. These standards are commonly used in plumbing and pipe fitting, but not in North America.

  • Straight Thread: Known as British Standard Pipe Parallel thread (BSPP), also referred to as BSPF (British Standard Pipe Fitting thread) or BSPM (British Standard Pipe Mechanical thread).
  • Taper Thread: Known as British Standard Pipe Taper thread (BSPT).

Standard Plumbing Tapered Pipe Taps
A plumber’s toolbox should always include a complete set of pipe taps to make sure the right tool is available for every job. NPT pipe taps are used to create or rethread metal pipes and fittings, providing superior threading for a tight seal. These taps are typically used in plumbing applications to thread pipes that transfer liquids and gases. Our taps are suitable for use with aluminum, brass, copper, or steel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

COATINGS

  • Oxided –  A heat treatment by which an oxide layer (Fe3O4) is formed on the surface of the tap to improve the adherence of threading agent which leads to improved output of taps.
    • Steam Oxide: To counteract galling lubricate tap surfaces. Best for low carbon, leaded steel, stainless and gummy material.
  • Hard Chrome – A thin hard chromium layer deposit (.0001 approximately). Increases the taps surface hardness and help reduce torque required to drive the tap. Proven advantageous in non-ferrous materials, such as copper, brass and bronze.
  • PVD Process (TiN, and TiCN) – Used to resist abrasion and chip welding. Biggest potential is for ferrous materials below 40RC.
    • TiN Titanium Nitriding
    • TiCN Titanium Carbonitriding
