Special Tap Feature – BROOM TAPS
Knuckle Thread (or Broom Thread) Taps
One of the more unusual thread forms we manufacture are Knuckle, or Broom, threads. The Knuckle, or Broom, threads have different flank angles, but they all have a very distinctive full radius on the crest and root of the taps. The taps also have larger than normal thread heights.
The combination of the large thread height and the radius crests and roots create a thread form that is ideal for applications where you have lots of debris or are concerned about thread damage.
The name “Broom Thread’ is from that application! When the broom handle is screwed into the broom, there is a radius thread form and this tap makes the female threads.
Some of the other applications that we see are described as Ball Nut Taps or Rounded ACME Taps. For the Ball Nut Taps, we also offer a timing feature, or a requirement that the thread starts in a specific location on the part. This timing feature requires special tap holders so that the tap is located in the exact same position each time.
Jarvis has years of experience in the grinding and inspection of these thread forms. We manufacture these taps as both cutting taps and forming taps. Because of the complex thread form, the forming taps require very exact pre-tapped hole diameters and Jarvis’ lab has helped our customers find the best hole size.
These taps require special dressers for the thread grinding equipment and the required inspection equipment. Beyond the equipment, grinding these threads require experienced machinists who are familiar with all the necessary inspection procedures.
